Somali Youth Recognition Awards

ABOUT THE AWARDS

The Algonquin College Somali Student Association (ACSSA) has established the Somali Youth Recognition Awards to recognize the significant accomplishments and enduring contributions individual Somali youth are making to their community. This will be the first annual awards ceremony.

ELIGIBILITY

Ø Be of Somali Descent

Ø Be a resident of the great Ottawa

Ø Be between the ages of 14-19

Please be advised to the following:

· To apply for an award, please follow the instructions carefully and fill in all the required information.

· Make sure to refer to the specific award requirements when applying for an award category.

AWARD CATEGORY and REQUIREMENTS

The following are the Award categories.

Academic Achievement

Nominees should have a history of outstanding academic achievement. Ideal candidates should demonstrate a combination of the following criteria:

Senior Award

Must be a high school graduate

Must be under 19 years of age

Ø Recognizes students who have performed exceptionally well in their academic studies

Ø Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 80% or A-

Ø Achievements acknowledged by scholastic bodies (Ontario Mathematical Association, National Science Fair, etc.)

Leadership Award

Nominees should present evidence of outstanding leadership within the community or in their school. Ideal candidates should demonstrate a combination of the following criteria.

Ø Leadership skills that include initiative, dedication, integrity, acceptance of responsibility, team work and effectiveness

Ø Commitment to affecting positive change in the Somali Canadian community and/or the Canadian community at-large

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

All submissions must include a completed nomination form. Self-nominations are encouraged. The completed nomination form and all supporting materials must be received no later than Friday April 14, 2006. All nomination materials are to be submitted to:

IV. AWARDS PRESENTATION

The 2006 Awards will be presented on Saturday May 13^th, 2006 at Algonquin College

Award winners will be notified of the Award Panel’s decision no later than Friday April 14, 2006.
